Ce que nous avons appris dans le cours d’histoire a façonné – plus que nous ne l’avons jamais compris – la vision que nous avons de notre vie.

Telle qu’enseignée couramment dans la plupart des cultures du monde, « l’histoire » est un récit de choses admirables (ou affreuses) dites ou faites par des gens privilégiés à des moments cruciaux dans l’histoire d’une tribu, d’un peuple, d’une nation. Le scénario, tel que nous l’avons appris, relie les points entre de grands héros militaires, de puissants monarques, et d’éloquents politiciens sur plus de quatre millénaires. De la Mésopotamie au reportage analysant le discours mémorable d’un législateur, « entrer dans l’histoire » est un acte que nous attendons d’autres personnes – de celles dont la vie est, pour une raison ou pour une autre, différente de la nôtre en raison de la richesse, de la lignée, ou de l’accès à l’éducation.
